Mehmet Onultan Will Live On!

Two of my works were exhibited at the “Ongoing Conversation Art: Drawn Together” exhibition, which was held in Florida between June 9 and July 3. The intention of the exhibition was sublime: “To draw” attention to international solidarity against the Covid-19 pandemic with the “co-drawn” productions of the selected artists from all over the world. In other words, the aim was to announce to the whole world that how we can stand together in the context of solidarity and creativity, especially in a period that different cultures are experiencing the same difficulties due to the pandemic.

This time, I will be participating to “Ongoing Conversation Art” exhibition to be held in Minsk between September 9 and October 31, with my cross-stitch piece, “TheM: Unfinished Work”. This work has a bittersweet devotion: In memory of kind-hearted philanthropist Mehmet Onultan, who lost his battle with cancer due to Covid-19.

With the permission and support of Mehmet Onultan's father, our friend Ahmet Onultan, I would like to briefly narrate Mehmet's inspiring life story:

Mehmet Onultan had been a very friendly child with his environment since his childhood. After graduating from primary school in Paris, he studied in Canada for a year; then took the Lycée de Galatasaray exam and started from the 7th grade at the age of 12. With the great contributions of her mother, Mücevher Hanım, he graduated from Lycée de Galatasaray at the age of 16, as the youngest graduate in high school history. Later on, he had studied at Galatasaray University, "Gestion-Business Administration" department and became the youngest graduate again. After all, Mehmet got the nickname, Pétit Mehmet due to his young age against his fellows. Meanwhile, he had started working part-time at Ekinciler while he was studying at the university. After receiving his BA, he got his MDA from Sorbonne, Paris. It is said that he had a structure that never liked to be idle and was prone to work all the time.

Mehmet Onultan was very fond of the visual arts. He often visited Italy with his family and admired Florence. He had a modest art collection of his own and enjoyed watching classical music concerts. He was a sensitive and careful person, freed from arrogance. He had been a true philanthropist that he provided financial support to many university students in need; but most importantly, he did all of those in modesty.

Unfortunately, Mehmet had been receiving cancer treatment in the United States for three years, but when he was infected with Covid in December, he had to stop the treatment for 4 months. That's why the cancer has spread and unfortunately he lost his battle.

His friends from Galatasaray shared his family's sadness and “The Mehmet Onultan Scholarship" was formed at Galatasaray University. As long as this fund is supported, our young generation children will be provided with higher education opportunities and Mehmet Onultan’s memory will live on with the success of those children.

I would like to dedicate my piece, "TheM - Unfinished Work” to raise awareness of Mehmet Onultan's memory and all the beauties he had tried to create.

Finally, I would like to thank to artist Soude Dadras and to landscape architect Sara Dadras, whom initiated the "Ongoing Conversation Art" project, and having me taking place in this international exhibition with such a beautiful purpose, giving "strength and unity" messages to the society. Herewith, Mehmet Onultan will be commemorated with artist solidarity, in the second challenging year of Covid-19.

Mehmet Onultan’s achievements and his beautiful heart will always be remembered.

9 Haziran – 3 Temmuz tarihleri arasında Florida’da düzenlenen “Ongoing Conversation Art: Drawn Together” sergisinde iki eserim sergilenmişti. Serginin amacı ulviydi: Dünyanın dört bir yanından projeye katılan sanatçıların “birlikte çizilmiş” üretimleri ile Covid-19 salgınına karşı oluşturulan dayanışma gücüne dikkat çekmekti. Bir başka deyişle, salgın nedeniyle farklı kültürlerin aynı zorlukları tecrübe ettiği bu dönemde, dayanışma ve yaratıcılık bağlamında nasıl bir arada durabildiğimizi göstermek ve bunu dünyaya duyurmaktı.

Bu defa, 9 Eylül – 31 Ekim tarihleri arasında Minsk’te düzenlenecek “Ongoing Conversation Art” sergisine “TheM: Unfinished Work” kanaviçe eserimle katılacağım. Bu eserin buruk bir adanmışlığı bulunuyor: Covid-19’dan dolayı kanser savaşını kaybeden iyi kalpli ve gerçek bir hayırsever olan Mehmet Onultan’ın anısına farkındalık yaratmak.

Mehmet Onultan’ın babası, dostumuz Ahmet Onultan Bey’in izin ve desteği ile Mehmet’in ilham veren yaşam öyküsünü kısaca aktarmak isterim:

Mehmet Onultan, küçük yaşlarından beri çevresiyle çok barışık bir çocukmuş. İlkokulu Paris’te bitirdikten sonra bir sene Kanada’da okumuş ve Galatasaray Lisesi’nin imtihanına girerek, 12 yaşında 7'ci sınıfa başlamış. Annesi Mücevher Hanım'ın da büyük katkılarıyla hiç sene kaybetmeden 16 yaşında Galatasaray Lisesi’ni, lise tarihinin en genç mezunu olarak bitirmiş. Galatasaray Üniversitesi’nin imtihanını kazanarak "Gestion-İşletme" bölümüne girmiş ve yine en genç mezunu olmuş. Zaten Mehmet’in lakabı "Pétit Mehmet” imiş. Namık Ekinci’nin ısrarıyla üniversiteyi okurken Ekinciler’de yarı zamanlı çalışmaya başlamış. Sorbonne’da MDA yapmış. Boş durmayı hiç sevmeyen, devamlı çalışmaya yatkın bir yapısı varmış.

Mehmet Onultan, güzel sanatlara çok düşkünmüş. Özellikle ailesiyle sık sık İtalya’ya gidermiş ve Floransa’ya hayranmış. Kendine ait mütevazı bir koleksiyonu bulunuyormuş. Klasik müzik konserlerini izlemekten zevk alırmış. Hassas bir kişilikmiş. Kimseyi kırmamaya özen gösterirmiş. Kibir diye bir şey bilmezmiş. Birçok üniversite öğrencisine, zorda kalanlara sessizce maddi destek sağlıyormuş.

Maalesef Mehmet üç senedir Amerika’da kanser tedavisi görüyormuş fakat Aralık’ta Covid’e yakalanınca tedaviyi 4 ay kesmek zorunda kalmışlar. Bu yüzden de kanser iyice yayılmış ne yazık ki. Galatasaraylı arkadaşları ailesinin hüznünü paylaşmış ve Galatasaray Üniversitesi’nde “Mehmet Onultan Bursu” oluşmuş. Zaten dar gelirli 10 çocuğa burs veriyormuş. Bu fona destek olundukça genç nesil evlatlarımıza yüksek tahsil imkânı sağlanmış olacak ve Mehmet Onultan o çocukların başarılarıyla yaşamaya devam edecek.

Böylesi güzel amacı olan, topluma “birlik” mesajı veren uluslararası yeni bir sergide bu defa Mehmet Onultan’ın güzel kişiliğine ve burs fonuna farkındalık yaratmak adına yer aldığım için “Ongoing Conversation Art ” projesini başlatan sanatçı Soude Dadras’a ve peyzaj mimarı Sara Dadras’a çok teşekkür ederim. Covid-19’un zorlu ve hüzünlü hikayelerle dolu ikinci senesine yaklaşırken, sanatçı dayanışması ile kıymetli insan Mehmet Onultan bu sergi vesilesiyle anılmış olacak.
